Fran Alonso may leave Celtic for another job as the women’s manager is frustrated with the club’s budget in the midst of a title battle with Rangers.
Budget constraints have left the Celtic women’s manager frustrated, and he may be offered a way out of Glasgow.
Fran Alonso, a target for Mexican club Monterrey, could leave Celtic.
The Spaniard is the man Las Rayadas want in charge now that their manager, Eva Espejo, has moved from the dugout to the boardroom. Last season, Alonso led Celtic to within minutes of their first SWPL title before being pipped by Glasgow City, and he delivered the Scottish Cup with a Hampden victory over Rangers.
He has been frustrated by the club’s financial constraints and may be tempted to relocate to Mexico. His team will face Spartans tomorrow in an attempt to keep the pressure on league leaders Rangers. “It’s our last home game of the year, and we want to go out with a bang,” attacking midfielder Maria McAneny said. The last two games will be tough, but we just need to go out there and put everything we’ve learned in practice to work.”
Jo Potter’s Gers lead the table by a point after 13 wins and a draw in their first 14 games, and they travel to Motherwell looking to extend their unbeaten run. “I know it sounds a bit cliche but we do take it game by game, we know that we can’t look too far ahead.,” Potter said.
“Yes, we are the only team that is unbeaten in the league right now but that is not something that we talk about in all honestly. If it happens that you do lose a game but you reach success at the end of the season you’ve still got success. It is all about how we are progressing as a group and progressing as a team.”
Glasgow City, who are third in the table, have been boosted by the news that Scotland international Fiona Brown will return to the club next month after seven successful years in Sweden. Brown, who won three championships, two Scottish Cups, and two SWPL Cups before leaving in 2016, said, “When I left, I said I’d be back. I’ve been Glasgow City’s biggest fan for seven years but I’m excited to get back on the pitch with the girls.”
