Rangers SFA VAR dispute brought to parliament as ‘culture of secrecy’ is questioned
Jamie Dornan proposed a motion to increase transparency in Scottish football.
SNP MSP Jamie Dornan has challenged the “culture of secrecy” in Scottish football by bringing the Rangers vs SFA VAR audio feud to parliament.
It comes after days of heated debate between the club and the governing body over how the penalty drama unfolded during Gers’ 2-1 loss to Celtic last weekend. Willie Collum ruled that Alistair Johnston did not handle the ball inside his own box, but the Light Blues were furious. In the build-up to the moment, there was also a call to show an offside, which appeared to backfire and only fueled the anger that the audio never highlighted any potential offside involving Abdallah Sima.
Gers demanded that the audio be released, and then, after a meeting with the SFA that they claim went well and amicably, the club issued another incendiary statement indicating that they were still unhappy.
Dornan has now introduced a motion titled ‘Calling for SFA Transparency,’ in which he requests that the Parliament “support recent reported moves by Glasgow Rangers FC to get the Scottish Football Association (SFA) to release the conversations by video assistant referee (VAR) officials during the recent game against Celtic FC.”
“That it recognises what it sees as the longstanding culture of secrecy that exists within the ruling hierarchy of Scottish football.
“And urges the SFA to ensure that all VAR decisions, and any other decisions requested by a club involved, are made publicly available on such a request, and believes that, if the SFA and Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) continue with what it considers is their ongoing culture of secrecy, then there is a need to consider an independent regulator for football, similar to the plans reportedly due to be introduced into the UK Parliament, but one which would be unique to the circumstances of Scottish football.”
In other news, Rangers and Celtic are both keeping an eye on £5.5 million dubbed ‘new Moises Caicedo’, according to journalist.
