Fresh Ianis Hagi twist as Rangers January loan return fades in the rearview mirror
Rangers do not have a recall option on Ianis Hagi’s loan and will have to strike a deal with Alaves to bring him back in January.
The Romanian playmaker, 25, is currently on loan with the La Liga club until the end of the season, with no option to buy in the deal with Rangers.
Some speculated that incoming Belgian manager Philippe Clement would look to recall Ianis Hagi in his first transfer window after loaning him out during Michael Beale’s tenure at Ibrox.
This was a conversation that heated up when Heart & Hand, a leading Rangers fan media outlet, suggested that the Romanian had an option in his Alaves contract.
It’s important to stress that the outlet simply said “we can, would be up to boss” when asked if the club could get Hagi back in January.
There is no loan clause in the Ianis Hagi-Alaves deal.
With Rangers now nearly a week and a half into January, there has been little discussion about Ianis Hagi’s loan termination with Alaves.
According to Football Scotland, this is due to the lack of a January return clause in the loan agreement, which requires Rangers to negotiate with Alaves if the midfielder wishes to return.
Mid-season loan return clauses are common in football, as evidenced by Rangers-linked Liverpool left-back Owen Beck, but the report suggests one has not been included here.
Ianis Hagi initially engineered the loan move out of Ibrox due to a lack of assurances about playing time while recovering from a devastating cruciate ligament injury.
There is no suggestion that the Rangers want to return.
It is worth noting that, while there has been much talk about Ianis Hagi and a possible Rangers return, there has been no indication that this will happen.
In fact, when pressed by a reporter from the Turkish media, Philippe Clement remained true to form and refused to comment on the situation.
The attacking midfielder has also expressed his happiness to be playing in Spain, and the situation raises the question of what will happen to Hagi when he returns to the squad this summer.
While recovering from his devastating knee injury, the ex-KRC Genk star signed a new contract with Ibrox last season, committing him to the club until 2026.
in other news, According to Scottish media, Josh Doig’s move to Rangers is still on the table.
