Despite European interest in Celtic’s defender, a transfer is ‘no closer’.

The transfer window is starting to see some activity, but one Celtic player appears set to stay in Glasgow.

According to reports from the Daily Record, Celtic’s forgotten man Gustaf Lagerbielke is ‘no closer’ to leaving the club, despite rumoured interest from Italy.

The Swedish international joined the Scottish champions on a five-year contract in the summer as a replacement for the departing Carl Starfelt, but he appeared to be on his way out after a difficult start to life in Scotland.

A number of Serie A clubs were thought to be circling in order to take the Swede on loan until the end of the season, but reports claim that interest in the centre back has ‘cooled,’ leaving the 23-year-old with an uncertain future heading into the second half of the season.

Lagerbielke, despite arriving with a good reputation, has found himself behind Cameron Carter-Vickers and a transformed Liam Scales at the heart of defence, with both Maik Nawrocki and Stephen Welsh appearing to be Brendan Rodgers’ preferred back up when his first choice duo are unavailable. Nat Phillips, another summer signing, has already left the club after his loan period expired.

Despite the fact that interest in the centre-back has cooled, Italian side Genoa may renew their interest later in the window after Romanian centre-half Radu Drăgușin left the club for Tottenham Hotspur in a £20 million deal last week, joining former Hoops boss Ange Postecoglou. Lagerbielke has been identified as a possible replacement for Drăgușin by the Italian website TUTTO mercato.

The 24-year-old was drafted in after summer signing Marco Tilio failed to make an impression on the club and Daizen Maeda was ruled out of the Asian Cup with Japan.
