Celtic are ‘closing in’ on the Sydney van Hooijdonk transfer
Celtic are reportedly closing in on the signing of Sydney van Hooijdonk.
The Bologna forward was left out of Thiago Motta’s squad for last night’s game against AC Milan, which ended 2-2.
And the 23-year-old is expected to follow in his father Pierre’s footsteps by joining the Hoops.
The Celtic icon’s son has long been linked with a move to Glasgow. The champions have been linked with a loan deal until the end of the season.
The player’s situation appears to have changed significantly.
TNT Sports broadcasters suggested that Van Hooijdonk’s absence from last night’s draw at the San Siro was due to a potential move to Celtic Park.
Bologna is said to have told the frontman that he can leave on loan before the transfer window closes.
He recently discussed his future. He stated, “I’m on a good team and I enjoy life a lot. But I need to do what is best for my development. For my professional career. I also need to play.
“In football, things change quickly; who knows what will happen?
“Now there’s Joshua, who is having an excellent season. Do the rumours about my potential transfer bother me?
“It’s normal to not play. In the last year and a half, I’ve played and scored a lot.
“In my opinion, Bologna has changed since I first visited two years ago. Everything’s improved. The level is everything. “We will see what happens.”
Meanwhile, Celtic match-winner Alistair Johnston admitted tonight that the “patchy” Parkhead pitch is preventing the Scottish champions from playing the free-flowing football that manager Brendan Rodgers desires – but he insisted they cannot use it as an excuse for poor performances.
Canadian right-back Johnston scored his first goal at Celtic Park in just 54 seconds of this afternoon’s crucial Premiership game against second-bottom Ross County, and his strike was all that separated the two teams at the end of 90 minutes.
