Julie McLaren, Siobhan Hunter’s mother, fell while on vacation in Tenerife, Canary Islands earlier this month, leaving her hospitalised in the foreign country.

The family was able to raise enough funds through a GoFundMe campaign to fly Julie back to Edinburgh, where she is currently receiving treatment for a brain aneurysm.

The latest act of generosity from Hibs Women FC saw the gate money from yesterday’s match against Motherwell donated to the same fundraiser to help the family.

Hibs Women shared images on social media yesterday of Siobhan and her teammates warming up in t-shirts featuring an image of her mother and the words “Keep fighting Julie”.

The Hibees defeated Motherwell 5-0 in a game in which the team concentrated on one of its own.

Siobhan and sister Georgi set a target of £2,000 to try to get to Tenerife to see their mother, but they have now raised more than £50,000.

The Leith side took to social media to notify supporters of their intention to donate the funds, writing:

“Siobhan’s mother Julie McLaren suffered a brain aneurysm whilst on holiday in Tenerife earlier this month.

“This led to Julie being placed into an induced coma and left in a critical condition whilst abroad.

“Thanks to the generous support of friends, family and the wider community the family raised the funds necessary for an air ambulance to transport Julie from Spain to the intensive care unit at Edinburgh’s Royal Infirmary.

“Hibernian FC will donate the gate money from Sunday’s league fixture against Motherwell to the ongoing treatment of Julie McLaren.”

The ‘Help Julie’ fundraiser is currently at £54,045, with a goal of £55,000 hoping to be met with the Hibernian match day donation.
