David Turnbull speaks out about his Cardiff City move.

After three and a half years and 31 goals, seven of which came this season, David Turnbull has left Celtic to join Cardiff City.

With add-ons, the deal is reported to be worth £2 million, but the base fee is unknown. With his Celtic contract expiring in May, the majority of his fee is likely to be based on bonuses, with Cardiff currently seven points from a Play Off spot.

Turnbull was the last significant transfer between Celtic and another Scottish club; his departure reduces Celtic’s UEFA options, as he was one of the SFA-trained players, along with Scott Bain, Greg Taylor, and Mikey Johnston, who met the criteria.
Signed in August 2020 after losing to Ferencvaros in the Champions League, the then-u-21 international had to wait until December to establish himself in Neil Lennon’s team, helping Celtic win the Quadruple Treble by defeating Hearts in the Scottish Cup Final.

Celtic: David Turnbull looking forward to 'fresh start' under new boss Ange Postecoglou | The Independent
Under Ange Postecoglou, he played an important role in the first half of the 20/21 season, but after suffering a serious hamstring injury in the League Cup win over Hibs, he found Reo Hatate and Matt O’Riley ahead of him when he returned to fitness.

Turnbull’s 31 Celtic goals ended with a penalty against Motherwell at the end of October.
The midfielder informed the Cardiff website:

I’m thrilled to be here. It’s been a long day or two, but I’m relieved to be finished and excited to get started. When I heard about the interest, I was very interested. It’s a huge club. I’ve seen them before and want to get involved now.

It’s a fantastic city, and seeing the stadium when I arrived was a pleasant surprise. It’s fantastic, and I’m really looking forward to it.

Cardiff manager Erol Bulut added:

I see a lot of quality. He’s a good age, having spent the last three seasons with Celtic, where he scored and assisted on numerous goals. This is exactly what we need in our midfield. He is creative in the offensive shape and can execute attacks.

We now have good options in different styles. We have both defensive midfielders and creative players. In the second half, we can now change a few players while maintaining the same level.
