“They don’t get that kind of accolades” – St. Mirren Manager Praises Underappreciated Aspect of Celtic’s Game
Japanese strikers Kyogo Furuhashi and Daizen Maeda scored to help Celtic win the Scottish Cup 2-0 on Sunday afternoon. Although the forwards’ actions were critical, the Hoops’ backline was equally important to the victory.
Stephen Welsh and Liam Scales formed a defensive partnership. Alexandro Bernabei remained at left-back, while Tony Ralston took over for the injured Alistair Johnston.
Every defender contributed to the victory, with Joe Hart coming up big in goal with saves, punches, and clearances. The English custodian has been in excellent form.
Hart and his defence have proven their worth in recent games, with St Mirren’s manager praising the champions’ backline. Celtic’s defence may be overlooked because they are known for dominating, attacking football, but Stephen Robinson disagrees: “About Celtic defensively, they don’t get that kind of credit” (PLZ Soccer).
“They’re classed as a very good football team but some of the blocks that they made in the six-yard box – and Joe Hart I thought was superb on the day dealing with corners and deliveries into the box – they deserve credit for that as well at times.”
It can be easy for Celtic’s defensive players to switch off, especially given the nature of the majority of their domestic games. However, against St. Mirren at the weekend, the defence remained solid, and the praise they are receiving is well deserved.
