Shebahn Aherne, a former Celtic TV presenter, admits she’d love to see Jose Mourinho take over at Parkhead.

The Special One is out of work after being unexpectedly fired by Roma last month, despite leading the Italians to the Europa Conference League title in 2022 and the Europa League Final the following year. The legendary Portuguese manager has managed teams in most of Europe’s top leagues, including Real Madrid, Inter Milan, and Chelsea.

And talkSPORT pundit Aherne believes Celtic should give the 61-year-old the opportunity to shake up Scottish football when Brendan Rodgers steps down. Rodgers is currently under fire from the green-and-white faithful after Rangers overcame a seven-point deficit to leapfrog their opponents at the top of the table.

Despite his previous Double Treble success, a section of concerned fans has already called for the Northern Irishman’s head. While the 51-year-old’s job isn’t in danger right now, Aherne believes Mourinho would be an excellent replacement for Rodgers if he ever leaves.

She told talkSPORT that “I like the idea. He’s in his 60s now, he’s a legend, I think he could spice up the Scottish Premiership. I think the idea of Jose Mourinho being involved in Old Firms [derby against Rangers] could be total magic and also it could give them a chance of Europe.

“It would be utter chaos and we like to see that. Okay, there’s lines to the chaos here but I do think that there’s something in it there.”

Aherne, who has previously hosted Celtic TV’s matchday coverage, also believes the man who broke Celtic’s hearts in the 2003 UEFA Cup Final against Porto can lead the Glasgow giants to European success.

“You look at the job that Jose did at Roma, the proud moments that it brought for him over his career, Celtic is a massive club all over the world, a world-renowned club.

“And then we talk about money, would they be able to afford him? You look at what he earned at Roma, it was around about €6million the salary over the year, [Brendan Rodgers is on] about £3-3.5million but we all know the cost of living is a little bit cheaper in Glasgow. It would make sense, wouldn’t it?

“Big manager, big club, experience in Europe. Celtic are terrible in Europe, Brendan Rodgers actually is worse in Europe I think than Celtic are. He’s got a terrible record, so a manager that actually could bring maybe some glory.”
