“There is absolutely no way that it is a penalty on this earth,” RAMPS UP SFA ROW RODGERS
The anticipation for Brendan Rodgers’ March 28 appearance at Hampden has increased.
Naturally, the SFA has called the Celtic manager to clarify his comments made after the champions’ contentious 2-0 loss to Hearts at Tynecastle last weekend.
Referee Don Robertson made a number of puzzling decisions during the match, following strange VAR assistant John Beaton’s interventions in two first-half incidents in which Hoops winger Yang Hyun-jun was sent off and the home team was given a phantom penalty kick.
There was never a “clear and obvious error,” so the technical expert shouldn’t have been called in to assist in front of Glasgow’s multiple screens.
The manager and Celtic are prepared to square off against the dominant team in Scottish football later this month. The Irishman will miss the games on March 31 and April 7 at Ibrox due to a two-game ban.
An unapologetic Rodgers emphasised, “Anyone who watches football will look at the penalty and know that there’s absolutely no way on this earth that it’s a penalty,” after reviewing the spot-kick award in Edinburgh.
“It’s evident that you [the media] don’t feel that emotion, which is frustration. When something like that happens during a game and you are asked to comment on it.
You don’t most of the time. But I thought that was a crucial point.
It was evident that Rodgers was displeased that two of the SFA’s most seasoned officials had influenced the contentious choices that destroyed Parkhead’s hopes of returning to the Premiership’s highest level.
Responding to suggestions that Beaton is having problems after the Irishman made a number of strange decisions during his time at Parkhead, Rodgers told the D Daily Record: “No.” No, each of us is responsible. There is no doubt that he was in the VAR.
Therefore, it’s not a secret—I haven’t made any mention of anyone who would have remained anonymous.
“My main argument was that the person who examined it had that experience. John has been officiating major games for a while now. Therefore, I wasn’t criticising John for having his name public.
What was more apparent was that this excellent referee was handling the match and, presumably, excelling in VAR without any pressure. However, they were still in error. For me, that is the greater concern.
“John has been an excellent referee in games. I therefore have no problem with that.
“I’m referring to that particular game, and that was how I saw it. It has nothing else to do with it. Let’s concentrate on playing football and making wise choices.
Reiterating his opinions regarding Robertson and Beaton, Rodgers continued, “Hopefully, if you work as a team and have experience, you get to the right decisions.”
“The game was significant.” Clearly, that’s the reason they were there. Thus, your hope is that the major choices will be wise ones. In all honesty, I didn’t even think they were big decisions, even though they had significant ramifications.
“Not when you know for sure that the referee called the right call in the game [Yang receiving a yellow card].”
Rodgers will now set aside his thoughts regarding the SFA double-act until he visits the sixth floor of the national stadium in order to focus on tomorrow afternoon’s Scottish Cup quarterfinal matchup against Livingston in Glasgow.
