“Hoped it would go better” – Player unhappy with Celtic’s summer exit, in relegation battle after leaving Rodgers’ side.
Defender Carl Starfelt admitted that he had hoped that his transfer to Celta Vigo would go more smoothly than it has.
The defender spoke with Fotboll Direkt, admitting he had different ideas after leaving Brendan Rodgers’ side in the summer.
Starfeldt moved to Celtic Park from Rubin Kazan in July 2021, ending a two-year tenure with Celtic in the summer.
He made the decision to travel to Spain and join Rafa Benitez at Celta Vigo, a €5 million move that guaranteed Celtic got their money back.
He was going to be joining a team that had placed 13th in La Liga the previous year, three points clear of the relegation zone and Valladolid, who dropped to 18th place with 40 points.
Although it was hoped that Benitez’s appointment would bring about more stability, after 29 games, they are currently in 17th place, five points ahead of Cadiz in 18th place.
Benitez has already been removed from his position, and the defender admits he expected something different when leaving Celtic.
“It has felt good for me, but I had no expectations when I arrived, but of course we meet very good players every week in Spain, which develops you incredibly much,” he said.
“I am happy with my own season, but I had hoped that it would go better for the team.
“We will do everything we can to secure our league status. There are nine games left but it’s still only five points down, it can go fast in football… but really, I don’t think we should be down there at all, we have too good a team. So, I hope we stay and do better next season.”
