‘Celtic can do that’: Mark Guidi believes Brendan Rodgers could spend £5m to sign 23-year-old soon
The transfer rumour mill has been in full swing this week as Celtic have been linked with players not only coming into the club, but players potentially leaving.
The Jota to Celtic rumours are certainly not going away and, according to Mark Guidi, neither is the Sydney van Hooijdonk whispers.
The 23-year-old Dutch striker has been spoken about this week as a player of interest to Celtic and Guidi believes that if Celtic wanted to, they would go and spend £5m on the youngster.
Guidi said [The Go Radio Football Show], “I wonder if it’s Sydney van Hooijdonk because it’s not going away. He would appear to be surplus to requirements at Bologna.
“There obviously a history there with his dad who was a wonderful player for Celtic.
“He’s at a great age. He was on the verge of being more involved with the Dutch national team. He’ll be looking to get a move to force his way into that squad particularly with the Euros coming up next summer.
“And if the fee was ballpark £5 million roughly, Celtic can do that all day long and I think he’s 23, maybe 24, so yeah, why not? You’ve got to go and look at it.”
Celtic rally do need to add another striker to the ranks and with Brendan Rodgers wanting to add quality rather than a project signing to the squad is van Hooijdonk really the right player for that?
His goalscoring record and his age seem to suggest that the youngster would come under the project banner but with Guidi believing he has ambitions to break into the Dutch national side, maybe Sydney is the real deal.
I can’t see it to be honest. Van Hooijdonk’s record in front of goal hasn’t looked good since season 2017/18 and even then, that was at youth level.
If Celtic were to spend £5m on a striker, it would need to be one with a proven track record and that is, unfortunately, something that van Hooijdonk doesn’t have right now.
