According to the latest reports, the Saints are interested in acquiring a Fulham midfielder; sceptics will moan and say that another ex-player is back to St Mary’s, but it isn’t Harrison Reed who is the focus of attention, so they can relax.

According to Southamptonfcnews, the individual in question is Bobby De Cordova-Reid, who has not signed a new deal with Fulham and is thus a free agent.

Last season, he appeared 33 times in the Premier League for the Cottagers, with just 17 of those appearances coming as starters and the remaining 16 as substitutes. He was predominantly employed out wide on either flank, scoring six goals and adding two assists.

Overall, in five seasons at Craven Cottage, he played 159 League games, 101 of which were in the Premier League; he later spent a season in the top division with Cardiff, adding another 27 games.

Add to that roughly 200 Championship games for Fulham, Cardiff, and Bristol City, and he might be a valuable addition to the Saints’ roster as they prepare for next season.

So, although turning 31 in February, he could still compete in the Premier League and fit the bill at St Mary’s, providing a balance of experience with De Cordoba-REid and Ryan Fraser, as well as potential with Sam Edozie.

Some Saints fans have been unimpressed with the players linked with the club thus far, but it should be remembered that building a squad is about balance; it is about bringing in low-cost but experienced players, as well as young players and, finally, players at the top of their games.

All of this must be done while adhering to financial fair play rules, and with one eye on the fact that if we are relegated, we do not want to repeat past mistakes and find ourselves saddled with players for whom we have paid large transfer fees, are saddled with their wages, and have no choice but to send them on loan.
