“Wish I had played for Celtic during my prime”—the Dutchman expresses a significant Bhoys regret
The one regret Dorus de Vries has about his career and Celtic
Dorus de Vries, a former custodian for Celtic, has been thinking back on his time with the Bhoys and the little playing time he received under manager Brendan Rodgers.
De Vries joined Celtic in 2016, coinciding with Rodgers’s ascent to prominence during his first stint. After getting to know the Dutchman at Swansea City, Rodgers signed him.
The 2016–17 season began with the veteran appearing to have a strong case for being the team’s new first choice in goal.
But in the end, Craig Gordon earned a spot in the starting lineup and developed into one of Rodgers’ preferred options. In the end, De Vries would only play in 15 games for the team.
After departing Celtic in 2019, he declared his retirement and expressed gratitude for a fruitful career. He does regret not playing for the Bhoys at a higher level, though.
At Celtic, Dorus de Vries struggled with age and injury.
The former custodian stated to the Daily Record, “It was an odd period for me at Celtic.” I tore my ankle ligaments in my final Nottingham Forest game before I arrived. I therefore had that issue right away. When I was younger, I always imagined it would have been nice to play for Celtic.
“I had trouble with the physical side of things towards the end of my career. I was having trouble with my ankle and back. When I think back to my time at Swansea or Forest, I was therefore not performing to the level I was used to. Brendan desired a custodian to rival Craig at Celtic.
In order to adjust, he learned how to play from the back. Because of that, he was able to grow and eventually became an excellent custodian, which he still is. Regretfully, my injuries made it challenging. All I want is to have played for Celtic when I was younger.
