Celtic F.C
We need to talk about Mikey Johnston, who was terrific in Wednesday night’s preseason friendly.
Mikey Johnston’s performance against Queens Park certainly highlighted his abilities and his difficult career at Celtic thus far.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future with the club, Johnston demonstrated why he could still be a valuable asset, especially if he can consistently replicate the form he showed on loan at West Brom and in this thrilling preseason match.
Johnston’s dribbling and pace can cause problems for defenders, which is exactly the type of threat Celtic needs on the wings. His direct play and willingness to take on defenders could add another dimension to the team’s attack, something he has only occasionally demonstrated due to injuries and inconsistent selections.
It remains to be seen whether this improved preseason form will translate into consistent competitive performances.
Celtic may still decide to move him on if they believe he does not fit into Brendan Rodgers’ plans, but performances like tonight make that decision even more difficult.
He also faces Daizen Maeda’s challenge. He has that position locked down, and Johnston is completely ineffective on the opposite flank. But, to be honest, he would never be more than a squad player at Celtic.
This summer, Johnston will have to make some big decisions for the club.
