Celtic are in talks to sign a €5 million winger.
According to reports from Belgium, Celtic want to bring Royal Antwerp’s talented winger, Michael-Ange Balikwisha, to Glasgow. According to sources, the two clubs will hold talks this week, indicating Celtic’s serious interest in the Belgian star. [Sacha Tavolieri].
Balikwisha, a 23-year-old winger, has been a standout performer for Royal Antwerp since joining from Standard Liège in July 2021. He is primarily a left winger but is known for his versatility, as he can play anywhere on the front line, including right wing and second striker. This adaptability could be a huge advantage for Celtic as they look to improve their attacking options.
Since joining Antwerp, Balikwisha has appeared in over 98 league games, scoring 18 goals and providing numerous assists. His technical abilities, agility, and dribbling prowess have made him an important player for Antwerp. He helped them win the Belgian Pro League title in 2022-2023, their first in 66 years. Furthermore, he played an important role in Antwerp’s Belgian Cup and Super Cup victories, demonstrating his ability to perform in high-pressure situations.
Celtic currently have Daizen Maeda and Luis Palma on the left wing. Maeda has been a consistent performer, known for his tireless work ethic and speed. In contrast, Luis Palma had an inconsistent season last year, leaving fans and management concerned about his long-term impact at the club. The potential arrival of Balikwisha could breathe new life into Celtic’s attack, providing healthy competition and possibly pressuring Palma to deliver more consistently.
Balikwisha’s ability to play anywhere on the front line would give Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers more tactical options. His ability to take on defenders, combined with a keen eye for goal and the ability to deliver key passes, makes him a promising prospect for the Hoops. His experience in European competitions with Antwerp, including the UEFA Champions League, may also add experience and composure to Celtic’s squad this season.
The player’s value is unknown, but he was purchased in 2021 for around €5 million, according to Transfermarkt. You would expect the Belgian club to demand a sizable fee.
Celtic have yet to make an official signing this summer; hopefully, in the next 48 hours, we will see some movement.
