Kasper Schmeichel is getting closer to being unveiled as Celtic’s first summer signing.

The Danish No. 1 has agreed to join the Scottish champions on a one-year contract with an option for another season. Schmeichel will reunite with former manager Brendan Rodgers, whom he previously worked for at Leicester City. Schmeichel, who turns 38 in November, will take over for the recently retired Joe Hart in goal.

The veteran custodian is expected to be officially paraded by the Parkhead club in the coming days. According to Tipsbladet, Schmeichel will undergo a medical in Italy on Tuesday before flying to the United States to join his new teammates for Celtic’s 12-day trans-Atlantic pre-season tour.

Schmeichel, a free agent after a year with Anderlecht, was supposed to have a medical exam over the weekend, but clinics rescheduled it for this week. The 105-times capped star, who appeared in all four of his country’s Euro games, will now fill the void left by the influential Hart.

Aston Villa custodian Viljami Sinisalo could join the son of Manchester United legend Peter in Glasgow. According to reports, Rodgers wants to bring in the highly rated Finland international as a backup who will be mentored by the experienced Schmeichel. Sinisalo, 22, is regarded as a future number one by the Scottish champions.
