Ange Postecoglou, Ex-Celtic manager, is a ‘target’ for the England job.
Ange Postecoglou, the former Celtic manager, is a surprise contender to succeed Gareth Southgate as England manager.
The Australian has emerged as a genuine candidate to take over the role left vacant by Southgate yesterday.
The England manager resigned just two days after the team’s 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.
He led the national team for eight years, reaching two finals, a semi-final, and a quarter-final in major tournaments.
The FA’s current task is to replace Southgate, and the search is well underway.
Several candidates have already been mentioned, including Eddie Howe, the current Newcastle United manager, and Jurgen Klopp.
The latter has already been ruled out, but out-of-work Graham Potter is the frontrunner for the position.
In a surprising revelation, The Telegraph claims that Postecoglou is also considered a series option by the FA.
He won the Scottish Premiership twice with Celtic, as well as the Scottish Cup, before joining Tottenham Hotspur a year ago.
He led Spurs to fifth place in the Premier League last season and has secured Europa League football for this season.
According to the report, the FA has been tracking Postecoglou since before he joined Celtic. He was the head coach of Australia’s national team from 2013 to 2017, and his experience could lead to an approach.
Lee Carsley, the current U21 manager, is expected to be placed in interim charge until Southgate’s permanent successor is named.
Given that Postecoglou has only been Tottenham’s manager for a year, it’s unclear whether a change of scenery would be appealing at this point.
Postecoglou is on Scottish soil tonight, as Spurs face Hearts in a pre-season friendly at Tynecastle Park.
