‘Approach made’: Plymouth Argyle rush for three transfer targets ahead of QPR clash.

The Pilgrims will look to sign a new goalkeeper in time for their trip to QPR this weekend.

Plymouth Argyle are looking to move quickly in their search for a new number one custodian this week, ahead of a trip to Loftus Road on Saturday afternoon to face QPR.

This summer, Wayne Rooney lost Michael Cooper, his first-choice shot-stopper from last season, to Championship rivals Sheffield United. Cooper, who has yet to make his Blades debut after the deal was confirmed late last week, appeared in 19 second-tier games last season despite being plagued by injuries.

Conor Hazard has started between the sticks for Plymouth Argyle this season, but the team has conceded five goals in its first two Championship games. The club is expected to move to sign a new number one, with recent reports indicating decisive action before facing QPR.

According to Football Insider, Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Sam Tickle is a top target, with an official approach made to bring the 22-year-old to Home Park. Argyle will face Championship competition for the transfer, with another unnamed club said to have enquired.

The Latics have a strong negotiating position for any Tickle bid, as the player signed a new long-term contract earlier this year, committing his future to the club until 2028.

Meanwhile, transfer specialist Alan Nixon has reported that Plymouth Argyle’s eager search for a custodian indicates that other deals are in the works. Bolton Wanderers’ Nathan Baxter has been named as another target, along with Blackpool’s Daniel Grimshaw, with the duo potentially more affordable options if a bidding war breaks out to sign Tickle.

Rooney’s side is currently 21st in the Championship after only two games played. The Pilgrims have one point on the board after a draw against Hull City last time out, which is the same as Marti Cifuentes’ QPR heading into this weekend.

The R’s earned their first point of the season against Sheffield United, coming back from two goals down to draw 2-2 despite a Jack Colback red card. QPR are ranked 18th in the table.
