Celtic agree to sell Matt O’Riley to Brighton for Scottish record £30m

MATT O’RILEY is poised to tie up his record-breaking move to Brighton after Celtic last night agreed a deal in principle with the Seagulls worth up to £30m.

The 23-year-old was the target of multiple rejected offers from Atalanta throughout the summer, and his departure was finalised when the English team agreed to pay Celtic’s £26 million valuation.

However, Mail Sport has learnt that amount—£4 million more than the club’s previous record acquisition of Jota from Al Ittihad—will increase by an additional £4 million with add-ons during the player’s stay in England.
The Denmark international is now anticipated to skip Celtic’s away match against St Mirren tomorrow as he heads south to complete the necessary paperwork.

In order to replace the player, Brendan Rodgers will now work harder to sign Mateusz Bogusz, an attacking midfielder for LAFC who is expected to cost £8 million.

The Parkhead club made a remarkable business move with the O’Riley deal.
Under Ange Postecoglou, the Fulham academy graduate joined from MK Dons in January 2022 for a meagre £1.5 million.

The midfielder advanced to become a full international after winning three championships, two Scottish Cups, and a League Cup.

Atletico Madrid took notice of his Champions League performances.

Despite Celtic turning down the Spanish powerhouses’ January £20 million offer for him, he continued to be in demand due to his season-long performance, which saw him score 19 goals and dish out 18 assists.
