Celtic land exclusive status in Champions League as duelling Rangers fixture dates answered by UEFA

The Champions League and Europa League group stage format has undergone a major shake-up this season, with UEFA granting an ‘exclusive week’ to all of its club competitions

A new ‘exclusive’ game week format for the UEFA calendar means that Celtic and Rangers will begin their European campaigns in different weeks.

The Champions League is typically played on a Tuesday and Wednesday, followed on a Thursday by Europa League (and later Conference League) matches. However, under the new arrangement, the Champions League’s first matchday will only take place over three days on Tuesday, September 17, Wednesday, September 18, and Thursday, September 19, putting the competition front and centre.

The following week, on Wednesday, September 25, and Thursday, September 26, there will be no Champions League matches played. Instead, the group stage of the Europa League will begin. Starting on Thursday, October 3, the Conference League—which this season includes teams like Hearts and Chelsea—begins. However, it does not receive its own exclusive week until December 19, which is the last set of games in the league phase of the competition.

On Wednesday, September 19, Celtic will welcome Slovan Bratislava to Parkhead as part of their Champions League schedule, while on Thursday, September 26, Rangers will travel to Malmo in Sweden to begin their European campaign. 36 teams compete in the league stage of both competitions under the revised format, which replaces the previous group stage structure. Each team will play eight matches against eight different teams, four at home and away.

The teams who finish in the top eight places directly progress to the last 16 stage, with the sides placed between 9th and 24th entering a play-off round. The teams who finish between 25th and 36th are knocked out of the competition.
