Jeremie Frimpong Delivers Celtic UCL Verdict Ahead of Dortmund Clash
Former Hoops player Jeremie Frimpong has offered his assessment of Celtic’s chances ahead of their Champions League matchup against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday. The Dutch international expressed optimism prior to the encounter, stating that it is a well-balanced game.
“It’s eleven men against eleven, and the best team will come out on top,” Frimpong told RecordSport. “That holds true for Celtic’s visit to Dortmund, and right now I’d say it’s a 50/50 game that either side could win.”
Although Frimpong’s confidence may come as a surprise to some, given Dortmund’s standing, his remarks follow a challenging week for the German powerhouses. After losing to Stuttgart 5-1 on Sunday, some people are wondering if Borussia Dortmund is still the same team that advanced to the Champions League Final the previous year. They overcame an early scare, falling down 2-0, to defeat Bochum 4-2 on Friday.
Frimpong noted significant additions and departures while acknowledging the adjustments Dortmund has endured. Yes, they did sell Niclas Füllkrug, an international striker, to West Ham in the summer. However, they added Maximilian Beier, who netted 16 goals for Hoffenheim, and Serhou Guirassy, who scored 28 goals for Stuttgart the previous season.
Additionally, they signed defender Waldemar Anton and midfielder Pascal Gross, who were both members of Germany’s Euro 2024 squad.
The former Celtic full-back is undoubtedly optimistic that the Hoops can win despite these new additions, even though most people would probably predict a Dortmund victory—especially since Celtic is playing away in one of the most intimidating venues in Europe.
Frimpong’s Short Celtic Career
Only 18 months after joining Celtic, Frimpong relocated to the Bundesliga, so he is familiar with what it takes to compete at this level. One of the biggest decisions Celtic has made in recent years was to send him to Bayer Leverkusen for £10 million, and he has subsequently flourished. He was a member of the Leverkusen team that surprised many by winning the title last season while going undefeated in the domestic league.
While Celtic will undoubtedly have a difficult battle in Dortmund, supporters will have hope because of Frimpong’s loyalty to his old team. Even though Dortmund has had inconsistent results and a lot riding on them, Celtic’s hopes are still quite real.
While Frimpong may see it as a 50/50, many will see the odds skewed slightly in Dortmund’s favour. However, football is full of surprises, and Brendan Rodgers’ side will be hoping to pull off a big one on Tuesday night.
