Micah Richards delivers verdict on Nottingham Forest penalty appeal involving Anthony Elanga
Micah Richards discusses if a penalty was appropriate for Nottingham Forest
Calvin Bassey appeared to try a clearance and clatter through the back of Elanga, which made the Reds feel agreed.
John Brooks, the VAR, decided not to send the on-field referee to the screen for this one even though a similarly easy decision was sent for review.
When Richards was questioned about the incident during Match of the Day last night, he discussed whether or not he believed Forest ought to have been given a penalty.
The former Premier League player said: “This is Bassey on Elanga. You know, when you slow down, it looks a bit like a penalty, but at full speed, I don’t think it’s a penalty. You see these angles here and the way. He does catch him a little bit, I don’t think it’s enough. If it goes to VAR, they are not going to overturn that, they are not going to. It’s the ref’s call, and I think he got it right on the day.”
Premier League officials have an obligation to act reliably.
Simply said, the referee overseeing the match on Elanga must also be sent to the screen if Murillo’s challenge is judged a foul.
Making poor decisions is one thing, but at the absolute least, match officials must maintain consistency.
It’s simply not good enough that VAR Brooks and referee Josh Smith made such wildly inconsistent decisions throughout.
Nuno Espirito Santo will feel resentful this weekend despite his extremely tactful remarks following the game.
When Forest’s next game is against Chelsea, they will need to get back up quickly and get ready.
