Liam Shaw makes surprising Celtic admission after sealing Parkhead exit

In his three years with Celtic, Liam Shaw only participated in two games. However, the underappreciated midfield player says he has no regrets about joining the Hoops.

Celts launched a double swoop on Sheffield Wednesday in 2021 as the Hoops poached up-and-coming youngsters Shaw and Osaze Urhoghide from Hillsborough. Yet despite making the breakthrough at the Owls as teenagers, the pair failed to make the grade at Parkhead. Powerhouse defender Urhoghide is now plying his trade with Ligue 2 outfit Amiens, while Shaw has just sealed a permanent exit to Fleetwood Town.

Shaw, 23, is eager to start playing regularly for the first squad after spending three seasons on loan in Glasgow. Even though the midfielder’s stay in Scotland didn’t go as expected, Shaw is adamant that he leaves Celtic Park with lifelong memories and a stronger player.

“I got the call from my agent that Celtic were interested,” he stated. It made perfect sense. A wonderful encounter. The caliber of instruction has elevated me. His debut against Real Betis was a “pinch me” moment. I said to myself as soon as I started playing, “Let’s get started.” We won the game, and I felt like I performed well. I will remember that experience for the rest of my life.

“I don’t think you can live with regrets. It was the right move for me at that time going to Celtic and it was honestly a privilege to be part of it all. I’ve learned a lot obviously, training with those sorts of players – I’ve picked a lot of stuff up from them to put into my game.

“I’m getting on a bit now being 23, but in football terms that is and now I just need get my head down, play games and get my name back out there. I did play last season, but I feel great and ready to get a full season under my belt.”
