Three Mavericks Making Cases for Roster Spots

The Dallas Mavericks have seen some young players step up during the preseason.

The Dallas Mavericks technically have no roster spots open, but Markieff Morris is on a non-guaranteed contract, and they could always waive a player from their two-way spot to make room for a promising young player. They’ve had a few young players step up and provide valuable minutes in the preseason, and they may choose to prioritize them over someone like Brandon Williams, one of three players on a two-way contract who has yet to play due to an injury.

Here are three young players on training camp contracts who are working their way toward a roster spot.

1.Jazian Gortman

Jazian Gortman had a fantastic first preseason game against the Memphis Grizzlies, scoring 19 points with three assists, three rebounds, and four steals. Despite playing fewer minutes against the Jazz on Thursday, he still managed six points and three assists. The Mavericks could use a young guard to develop, as Jaden Hardy, Quentin Grimes, and Spencer Dinwiddie all have one year left on their contracts. Gortman could force the Mavericks to make a difficult decision.

2. Jamarion Sharp

Jamarion Sharp was the tallest player in college basketball last season, standing 7’5″, and while his offensive game needs to be improved, he is a shot-blocking machine. He has blocked five shots in two preseason games, four of which came against the Jazz. He could be another big talent that they choose to develop.

3. Emanuel Miller

Emanuel Miller only played a few minutes against the Jazz, but he had a positive impact against the Grizzlies, scoring 11 points on 4/5 shots. He was a five-year college player who played in-state for Texas A&M and TCU, and he has a high ceiling if these teams decide they need more wing scoring.
