Howard Webb makes eye-opening admission involving Everton, he hates to admit it
Dominic Calvert-Lewin couldn’t believe his eyes as Craig Pawson decided not to award the Englishman a penalty for an apparent foul made by Dan Burn.
Howard Webb spoke on TV about the incident and stated that VAR got it right.
Refereeing is not part of Howard Webb’s job description at the PGMOL, which may be for the best given a recent statement he made about Everton.
Intriguingly, Webb mentioned a match between Everton and Bolton Wanderers in which he erred in awarding the Toffees a penalty involving Leon Osman during his appearance on the Overlap.
This is what he said.
In my second season, I had a really, really difficult game. In my debut season in the Premier League, I played in just eight games. In my second season, I officiated Everton vs. Bolton, and some really large personalities took me to the cleaners that day. such as David Weir, Tommy Gravesen, and Duncan Ferguson.
For the first twenty minutes, I officiated the game satisfactorily. I’m making decisions, but the stadium environment was incredibly toxic. I might have missed a few things or called a few fouls that might have been interpreted as soft, but after 20 minutes, it’s really getting to me.
And after that, I started to let things go a little bit, so I kind of went into hiding. Because I was receiving a lot of bad feedback at the time I was blowing, my threshold for delivering a foul sort of went too high, and I kind of started to bottle it up in that moment, which I hate to say.
“But you know, I was a pretty new inexperienced Premier League ref with some really experienced players.
“Gary Speed said to me about 40 minutes in, he said you’re starting to let us down he said you’re not doing your job. But he was spot on. I mean he was absolutely right.”
