Rangers’ midweek defeat to Aberdeen was disappointing, and Light Blues captain James Tavernier ‘understands’ the fans’ frustrations, calling for his teammates to improve.

Tavernier told the media: “We know as a team we have performance levels we can reach as we shown in Europe, it is important we are consistent as a team and reach these levels.

“We have constant dialogue and always look to improve. We demand more of each other. It is down to us as players to deliver results. There is criticism that happens with poor results you don’t want.

“It is down to us as players to deliver results. We are in it collectively as a team. It is important this weekend we get ourselves into the final, it is very important for us to retain the trophy.

“In the league, we know where we need to improve and we are working hard. We need to go and get results. At a club like Rangers, you have to win – this is the demands we have to meet.

“I totally understand the frustrations, we never want to drop points. As a captain, I am doing everything in my power to deliver a performance. We have to go do our talking on the pitch.”

Celtic will face Aberdeen at Hampden Park in the Scottish League Cup semi-finals, and Dons manager Jimmy Thelin isn’t taking the match lightly.

In a press conference, Thelin stated: “First of all, we need a good performance on Saturday. It’s a semi-final, we know it’s a cup, if you lose you’re out.

“If you win you go to the final, but the focus should be a good performance and giving everything we have and then let’s see the result. But everybody has to believe that they can do it.

“Otherwise, it’s unnecessary to play the game. So we have a strong belief that we know it’s going to be a tough game. We have to go 100% in with a strong belief we can make it.

“Everybody wants to win something, but the nicest thing is to see how the players grow, how we create a strong team spirit and how we can try to build this capacity that we can give us a chance of winning.

“Sometimes you can have a really good performance but you miss with a touch or whatever, but to see and create this togetherness and the spirit that we can give us a chance to do this kind of thing is what I want.”
