Celtic face Champions League battering and here’s why
Champions League winner and pundit Steffen Freund has warned Celtic that RB Leipzig are due to give someone a thrashing in the Champions League.
And he reckons the Premiership champions could be playing against this season’s Bundesliga champions-elect when they meet.
Celtic’s fourth group match comes against Leipzig at Parkhead this week, following a promising goalless draw against Atalanta last month.
However, following a terrible 7-1 thumping against Borussia Dortmund, players will remember their final encounter with a German team negatively.
Leipzig and Bayern Munich entered this weekend’s schedule tied for first place in the Bundesliga after an outstanding start to their domestic campaign.
But with three straight losses, they have had a terrible start to their Champions League campaign. Former Spurs, Borussia Dortmund, and Germany Euro 96 winner turned commentator Freund thinks they deserve a crushing victory in Europe.
“Mistakes that can be fixed in the majority of Bundesliga games are severely penalized in the Champions League,” he stated.
“RB discovered this the hard way while playing against elite teams like Liverpool, Juventus, and Atletico Madrid.
“But I certainly wouldn’t write them off to qualify.”In addition to playing Sturm Graz and Aston Villa, they now have an easier matchup versus Celtic.
“They will win games now, and they will win them well, in my opinion.
“The squad has been strong enough domestically to compensate for the absence of Xaver Schlager, David Raum and Xavi Simons.
“One of Marco Rose’s great strengths is his good relationships with his players.
“For me, there is no reason, why RB can’t go on and challenge for the title this season and even win it. We saw it was possible last season with Bayer Leverkusen.”
