Filipe Jota Update
Filipe Jota, the former Celtic star, appears to have gained favor with Rennes head coach Jorge Sampaoli after a standout substitute performance in their 4-1 victory over Bordeaux on Sunday in Ligue 1.

Jota Seizes His Opportunity
The 25-year-old Portuguese winger, who left Celtic for a record-breaking £25 million move to Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ittihad in July 2023, returned to Europe this summer to join Rennes. Despite his arrival, Jota initially struggled to convince Sampaoli of his value. However, his introduction on the hour mark against Bordeaux proved pivotal.
With Rennes leading 2-1 at the time, Jota injected energy into the game, assisting Arnaud Kalimeundo’s fourth goal to help secure a surprising 4-1 win.

Mixed Season at Rennes
Jota’s season so far has been a mix of challenges and opportunities. Despite rumors that he might be sold during the January transfer window to fund other moves, the Portuguese winger has featured in most of Rennes’ Ligue 1 matches. He has made nine appearances, amassing 331 minutes of playing time, including three starts across 15 fixtures.
His sole goal came in a 1-1 draw against Brest on October 19, but his recent performance may signal a turning point in his Rennes career.
Hopes for a Starting Role
Jota is now aiming to earn a place in the starting lineup for Rennes’ next league fixture against Nice, set for next Friday. His improved form and contribution could solidify his role within the team moving forward.
Unlikely Celtic Return
For Celtic fans harboring dreams of a return for their beloved former winger, it seems unlikely. Jota’s career trajectory appears firmly rooted in Europe, where he continues to strive for consistency and success with Rennes.
