Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo is on the verge of leaving Ibrox on loan this January, with a deal reportedly close to completion.

According to the Daily Record (15 January), the 24-year-old Welsh international is expected to join a European club on a temporary basis, though there is also interest from English Championship sides.

Limited Opportunities at Rangers

Matondo has struggled for consistent playing time this season under manager Philippe Clement, making just six Scottish Premiership appearances and contributing two goals and two assists. Injuries have further limited his involvement, with only 327 minutes played across eight matches in all competitions.

Despite flashes of potential, Matondo has been unable to establish himself as a regular starter, falling behind players like Ianis Hagi in the pecking order.

Loan Move: A Pragmatic Solution

A loan exit appears to be a mutually beneficial decision. For Rangers, a temporary move could include an option to make the deal permanent, potentially securing a fee for the winger, who is under contract until 2026. This could free up resources for the club to reinvest in the squad as they aim to close the 16-point gap to Celtic at the top of the table.

For Matondo, the loan offers an opportunity to gain regular game time, rebuild his fitness, and showcase his abilities, whether for a future return to Rangers or to secure a permanent move elsewhere.

Rangers’ Transfer Focus

With Rangers struggling to match Celtic’s dominance this season, reinforcements are needed to strengthen the squad. Allowing Matondo to leave on loan aligns with the club’s broader strategy of maximizing squad efficiency while addressing key areas for improvement.

If the deal materializes, it could prove to be a “win-win” scenario for all parties involved, with Matondo potentially rejuvenating his career and Rangers gaining financial or tactical benefits from his absence.
