“I think you guys need to understand…” – Jalen Hurts sends a perfect message to his doubters amid Eagles’ playoff push
For someone who consistently wins football games, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts often finds himself under scrutiny for not putting up eye-popping stats.
But Hurts remains unfazed by outside criticism, staying focused on leading the Eagles through their playoff campaign.
“I think you guys need to understand I don’t play the game for anything other than to win,” Hurts said. “My role in each game will be different, and the approach in each game is different. You just want to go out there and do your job and take advantage of opportunities, obviously. … Ultimately, it’s about winning the game. We’re talking about playoff football.”
Hurts has a point—winning is the ultimate goal, and he excels at it. With a regular season record of 46-20 as a starter, Hurts has proven himself as one of the NFL’s top winners. Only Donovan McNabb and Nick Foles have more playoff victories as starting quarterbacks in Eagles history.
While Hurts’ achievements may sometimes go underappreciated outside the organization, he has the unwavering support of his teammates.
“Jalen is built for this,” Saquon Barkley said after the Eagles’ 22-10 win over the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card Round. “He has highs, he has lows, but he led this team to a Super Bowl and did a really good job in the Super Bowl. I remember being in New York watching it and being amazed. … That’s our leader, and we got his back.”
Doubters will always exist, but it might be time to focus more on Hurts’ undeniable ability to lead and win rather than nitpicking flaws. At this point, Hurts could win a Super Bowl and some critics would still find something to diminish his accomplishment.
With a victory over the Los Angeles Rams in the Divisional Round, Hurts would tie Foles for the second-most playoff wins by a starting quarterback in Eagles history—a much more meaningful achievement than any single-game stat.
