‘Training today’ – Eddie Howe breaks silence as Miguel Almiron inches towards a Newcastle United exit to Atlanta United.

Eddie Howe has acknowledged that “anything can happen” as Miguel Almiron edges closer to a Newcastle United departure.

The Magpies are in advanced talks with Atlanta United, the club Almiron joined from six years ago, regarding a potential £11 million deal. Offloading Almiron would also relieve Newcastle of approximately £60,000 per week in wages.

Almiron has struggled for game time this season, managing just one Premier League start, and his lackluster performance against Bromley last weekend appears to have sealed his fate at St James’ Park. With Newcastle navigating tight Financial Fair Play (FFP) and Profit and Sustainability (PSR) constraints, his exit seems imminent.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Howe confirmed Almiron’s involvement in training and hinted at the possibility of a transfer before the January 31 deadline.

“The latest is we are expecting him in training today and to be part of our squad tomorrow,” Howe said. “I’d say, with him, anything can happen from this point. My concern is to try and get the squad focused [for Bournemouth].”

Howe praised Almiron’s professionalism despite the uncertainty surrounding his future.

“He has been top class,” Howe added. “His playing persona and personality is happy. He’s a brilliant professional. Miggy is one who will come in and live his life through the football club. His training performances, his focus, his personality have been very consistent. I have no issues with him on that side of things.”

Despite acknowledging the potential benefits of the deal, Howe admitted that selling a winger under current circumstances is far from ideal.

“It’s not ideal [selling a winger],” Howe admitted. “I don’t think it’s ideal from our side; we don’t want to lose players, but we know there’s a reality to PSR and the ongoing managing of that situation. Decisions aren’t being made for football reasons—they’re being made because we potentially have to [for financial reasons].”

Almiron’s future appears to hinge on the financial balancing act Newcastle must maintain, leaving fans waiting to see if this long-anticipated departure is finalized.
