A Celtics teammate retorted, “You can’t say that out loud,” in response to what Cameron Carter-Vickers had said about Joe Hart.
It came amid the drama of Saturday’s penalty shootout with Aberdeen.
Alistair Johnston hoped Joe Hart would score his penalty on Saturday so he didn’t have to step up himself.
The Celtic custodian was an unexpected selection in the selected five takers against Aberdeen, and he had a chance to win it because the Hoops had been spotless up to that point, while the Dons had missed one through Ryan Duncan. However, the 37-year-old’s attempt was insufficient, as he missed the post.
The shootout ended in quick death, and Johnston was one of the first to respond, despite his hopes that it would not go that far. The Canadian right-back was relieved when his strike found the net, and even more so when Hart went from zero to hero with a stop from Killian Phillips to seal the stalemate.
But he has also disclosed what Cameron Carter-Vickers told him prior to the shoot-out, which prompted him to caution his defensive partner.
He explained, “I was just begging for the final whistle, and then they scored.”
“My first thought was, ‘I’m going to have to take a penalty. I’m just happy that thing went in. There was relief when Joe made the save. He had the chance to win and big Cameron Carter-Vickers said, ‘this is going to be a fairytale for Joe’.
“I said, ‘you can’t say that out loud, you’ve jinxed it!’ Then, he hit the post. I knew I was going to take the sixth penalty and that I was next. Cheers mate! When he saved that final one it was relief. Joe is so good at those, he’s in great form.”
