Rangers F.C
A family member advised Robby McCrorie to leave Rangers during the January transfer window.
custodian Robby MCrorie has been told by his brother, former Ibrox player Ross McCrorie, to leave the club during the January transfer window.
Ross McCrorie came through the Ibrox youth system but left for Aberdeen in 2020 in search of regular first-team football before joining Bristol City in the English Championship during the summer transfer window.
Robby McCrorie has yet to play for the Gers this season due to the signing of Jack Butland last summer, and his brother Ross has urged the Rangers keeper to leave Ibrox so he can play every week.
“He’s at a stage where he’s got to be playing – he knows that,” he said in the print edition of the Sunday Mail (7 January, page 47). It reminds me of my departure from Rangers. I needed to practise playing games.
“Robby is a good custodian, so he’ll have to hear what the Rangers think about it and see what happens in January.” It’s a difficult decision to leave a club like that, but playing every week is the best thing for any player.
“That’s what makes you better.”
The best option for all parties
Butland is clearly Philippe Clement’s number one at Ibrox, and if he continues to perform at the level he has so far this season, he will be in goal for Rangers for many years to come.
That means there’s no clear path for Robbie McCrorie to break into the first team, let alone hold down a regular starting spot. While Butland is still in Glasgow, it appears unlikely that he will ever play 30 games or more in a season.
While 25 is still a young age for a custodian, it is also the age at which most stoppers begin to play regular first-team football. A January departure from the Rangers would be the best move for Robbie McCrorie’s career.
He should follow the advice of his brother Ross and make the switch before the end of the month. It worked well for him during his career, and it should work well for the young custodian as well.
