The Toffees have had a dismal start to the season, losing all four Premier League games and now been eliminated from the EFL Cup third round by Southampton.

Sean Dyche’s side squandered another 2-0 lead in the league against Aston Villa last weekend, with Keane criticised by the talkSPORT presenter.

Jordan, writing for the Daily Mail on September 19, believes that being relegated would be extremely harmful, particularly given the transfer to the stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock next season.

He said: “Relegation would be an absolute disaster. There is no comparison between their situation and Birmingham City, who are gaining momentum in League One after demotion.

“You drop out of this Premier League, you can’t muck about on the chance you may come back. Everton’s whole future and the reason for building this stadium was not to take one step back – it was to take two steps forward.

“My colleague Martin Keown was scratching his head about Everton’s defending at Villa last weekend. I’ll be less diplomatic, Michael Keane was absolutely useless. Allowing Ollie Watkins to win his header at the far post was due to desire, or lack of.”

Dyche and his team have had a terrible start to the season, losing four Premier League games in a row.

What is especially galling is that they squandered two-goal leads in consecutive Premier League games against Bournemouth and Villa.

The backline has been ineffective, surrendering goals on a regular basis, with even Jordan Pickford suffering for form.

This could be due in part to Jarrad Branthwaite’s absence, which has been aggravating during the season’s first few weeks.

Keane has deputised in his place, playing ahead of the summer addition Jake O’Brien, and has come under fire, even if it is difficult to argue he has been the most issue.

Indeed, despite losing on penalties to Southampton in the EFL Cup, the former England international grabbed an assist and was defensively solid overall.

Jordan clearly does not rate the former Burnley player, but there are many more serious issues at Goodison right now.
