According to Stephen McGinn, Alexandro Bernabei is not nearly as good as the player on Celtic’s B team.
According to pundit Stephen McGinn, Celtic have a young player that he thinks is superior to Alexandro Bernabei.
Since moving to Glasgow from Lanus in June 2022, the Argentine defender has had a lot of difficulty. And following yesterday’s transfer update, it appears that Bernabei is scheduled to depart the team after just 28 first-team games in the green and white hoops.
Hence, Greg Taylor would be Celtic’s only recognised first-team full-back if the 23-year-old were to finalise his transfer to Brazilian team Sport Club Internacional. This would leave Celtic severely short-handed at left-back.
Not until Brendan Rodgers gives the Celtic B team a quick look, as there is one player who is just waiting in the wings who could easily provide the much-needed cover. That’s what McGinn says.
[The Go Radio Football Show]: McGinn stated, “I’m probably happy that he is going.” Upon examining Alexandro Bernabei—and I know this sounds harsh—I noticed that, when it comes to left backs, the size is the first thing you notice.
“You notice his size right away and assume he’s too small to be a defender. You then conclude that he must possess exceptional ball skills.
He’s incredibly erratic with the ball. He has good crosses and bad crosses at different times. He’s been in possession of the ball when it breaks down a lot during his recent Celtic games.
He moves quickly, but not very quickly. As evidenced by the goal he just lost, he is not good in the air and cannot defend his back post. When you look at players like Mitchel Frame inside the building, he must possess qualities that make him a better fit for Celtic, right?
And given the way he’s playing, I doubt we’ll see him on the pitch until the end of the campaign. I anticipate that Liam Scales, Mitchel Frame, or Anthony Ralston will be used as cover.
McGinn and I both agree on this. Although I acknowledge that Taylor’s form has made it difficult for Bernabei to break into the Celtic first team, he hasn’t been able to take advantage of the opportunities that have come his way.
Conversely, young Frame could develop into a very talented player for Celtic. The 18-year-old defender was thrown in for his Champions League debut in the team’s victory over Feyenoord, and he received great reviews for not looking out of place in the greatest competition in Europe.
He hasn’t played since, though, and with Bernabei’s impending departure, perhaps he’ll get another opportunity before the season ends.
This season, Rodgers has given players like Rocco Vata and young Daniel Kelly an opportunity. Celtic supporters will be hoping that this is the start of the club’s plans to start integrating some of our best Lennoxtown talent into the starting lineup.
