Alex McLeish shares ‘absolutely gobsmacked’ Rangers admission
Alex McLeish discusses the Rangers’ ‘absolutely gobsmacked’ admission.
Alex McLeish believes that some of Rangers’ summer signings will be “absolutely gobsmacked” when they take the pitch against Celtic for the first time.
Since his arrival in Glasgow, Clement has spent the majority of his time righting the wrongs of Michael Beale’s tenure and cleaning up the mess that the Englishman left at Ibrox, and the match against Celtic is just another step in that direction.
Many Rangers players will be taken aback when they step onto that turf, surrounded by a sea of Celtic fans, but they must show the mental fortitude to block out all of that background noise and find a way to win.
Philippe Clement’s Light Blues visit Celtic Park on December 30th, looking to close the gap on Brendan Rodgers’ side at the top of the Scottish Premiership, but there are concerns that the occasion may take its toll on some of the Gers’ stars.
Rangers were defeated at Ibrox in the first meeting of the season, and McLeish has stated that Clement’s players will need to be mentally stronger this time to deal with the cauldron-like atmosphere created by the home crowd.
“That’s exactly what it will be, a massive cauldron,” he said on PLZ Soccer (20 December, 21:40). Those new players at Rangers will be walking into Celtic Park absolutely gobsmacked. Hopefully, their mentality will be strong for Rangers’ sake.
“He’s started off pretty well, a couple of iffy performances over the last couple of weeks but nothing would be better for the manager than to go and win at Celtic Park. Rangers have got to be really strong not only mentally but physically as well in this game.
“This is a game that will go past in a flash, but these guys have to stand up to it and show that they are capable of dealing with this kind of game for Rangers.”

This season, Clement has completely transformed the mentality at Ibrox, and now he must make his players feel ten feet tall when they face their Glasgow rivals. They’re more than capable of defeating the Hoops; they just need to show it.
McLeish may expect them to be stunned when they emerge from the tunnel, and they may be when the whistle blows, but as soon as the whistle blows, all attention must shift to the game.
