Stokes communicated with the woman and her family repeatedly in spite of a clear prohibition against doing so, which resulted in his apprehension and subsequent handcuffed court appearance at Hamilton Sheriff Court.

Stokes was sentenced to prison and prohibited from contacting his ex-partner for five years as well as her parents for a year after Sheriff Colin Dunipace criticised him for his persistent disobedience of the court’s orders and his behaviour towards his former partner. Amidst ongoing legal issues in both the Republic of Ireland and Scotland, Stokes had voluntarily returned to Scotland from Dublin last month and turned himself in at Motherwell police station.

According to court documents, Stokes vented his frustrations on social media and sent his ex-partner a total of 14 emails in which he accused her of infidelity and criticised her parenting abilities.

He has significantly reevaluated his behaviour as a result of these actions, according to Jim O’Dowd, his defence attorney. O’Dowd emphasised how Stokes’ attitude changed after his stay at HMP Addiewell, where he was subjected to threats against him and isolation because of his well-known status.

Sheriff Dunipace expressed disappointment in Stokes’ tragic turn in life and the waste of his talents, but the court’s decision highlights the seriousness of his actions. The sheriff made it apparent that the court had a duty to shield people from harassment and that, given Stokes’ history of noncompliance, it was not appropriate to entrust him with another community order.

Between 2010 and 2016, Anthony Stokes’ time at Celtic was characterised by both career successes and personal scandals. Stokes was a key member of the team after joining from Hibernian and formed a strong partnership with Gary Hooper under Neil Lennon.
