As transfer rumours swirl, John Brown reveals what he told ‘exceptional’ Rangers talent Ross McCausland.

John Brown has revealed what he told “exceptional” Rangers talent Ross McCausland after the winger extended his contract with the Gers.

According to reports, the Northern Irish forward has agreed to extend his contract with Rangers until the summer of 2027, despite growing interest from Premier League and European clubs [Anthony Joseph, 27 November].

McCausland has impressed in his limited game time for Rangers, and Rangers legend John Brown has shared the message he passed on to the 20-year-old, urging him to improve in the final third.

“I managed to see him pre-season against Everton and his ability is exceptional, as is his vision,” he said, according to the Daily Record (28 November).

“So I’ve watched him and he needs to fill out a bit, get more physicality about his frame, but he’s a good prospect.

“I spoke to him about being more clinical, which he did in the second half by scoring a wonder goal. He looks like the type that thrives on the big atmosphere. Playing with good players around about him will help him.”

Next step

McCausland is currently viewed as a young prospect who is ahead of his expected development and impressing much more than was expected of him this season, allowing him to avoid any early criticism or scrutiny from supporters.

However, once that new contract is signed, McCausland will no longer be considered a young talent, but rather a full-fledged member of the Rangers squad who will be expected to contribute more frequently with goals and assists in the final third.

Although his first-half strike at the Tony Macaroni Arena was ruled out, the 20-year-old showed excellent composure to smash in what was a fairly difficult chance against Livingston before the international break.

Philippe Clement prefers to use wide players, but he expects goals from players from all positions on his team. Due to the lack of consistent contributions from Rangers’ strikers, wingers in particular must chip in in the final third, and if McCausland wants to play consistently under the Belgian, he must heed Brown’s advice.
