BBC pundit shares what Everton star Jordan Pickford did when Harry Kane missed glorious chance for England
Izzy Christiansen has detailed what Jordan Pickford, the Everton custodian, did when Harry Kane missed a fantastic opportunity for England during their agonising Euro 2024 matchup with Slovakia.
In their last 16 match, Slovakia shocked everyone by taking an early lead in the first half, and England was far from their best in Gelsenkirchen. However, they produced more than enough opportunities to force extra time in the match, with a spot in the Euro 2024 quarterfinals on the line.
And maybe no player had a better chance than the one who, just before the final ten minutes, every England supporter would have wanted to take advantage of the fantastic opportunity: Harry Kane.
To the amazement of nearly everyone in the stadium, Kane was on the edge of the six-yard box, but for some reason he managed to head wide.
Jordan Pickford’s response after Harry Kane’s miss
Jordan Pickford was among those who remained in shock, according to Izzy Christiansen on BBC Radio Five Live (aired on June 30, 18:38).
“It was interesting to see how Pickford responded to that opportunity,” she said. He knows how close that was. “He just dropped to his knees and placed his hands on the floor, almost in a yoga position. And I can sense the fans’ growing frustration from their nervous facial expressions behind me.
The goalie was like millions of England supporters.
Harry Kane is probably going to score the goal 99 times out of 100 if you give him that chance. Sadly for the Three Lions, on Sunday, there was that one instance where he failed to even hit the target.
The Everton goalkeeper’s response would have been in line with what a lot of people would have thought. Even though England had played so poorly the entire tournament, their supporters would still have expected them to find a way to defeat Slovakia.
There was no gear, and the captain completely botched his lines right when it looked like he would have the opportunity to pull his team back into the match.
