Birmingham City dealt a double blow.

Birmingham City have been dealt a double blow after Chris Davies confirmed that two players will be sidelined following their midweek League One fixture.

In their midweek fixture, the Blues hosted last year’s beaten playoff finalists, Bolton Wanderers, at St Andrew’s. They defeated the Trotters 2-0, making it back-to-back victories.

Despite making the playoffs last year, Ian Evatt’s team has been disappointing this season, ranking 14th in the league.

That poor form does not detract from the fact that this is still a statement victory for the League One powerhouses, and after Wrexham struggled to a 0-0 draw against Huddersfield Town, it gives Chris Davies and his team some breathing room at the top of the table. However, this has come at a cost to the Blues.

Birmingham City have two players on the sidelines.

Jay Stansfield returned for the league leaders against Bolton, but Scott Wright had missed two games in a row. The Scot has not played since his return from the international break, despite not representing his country during that time.

Speaking to Birmingham Live, Blues manager Chris Davies confirmed Wright’s injury, and the former Rangers player will miss several more games, with the possibility of not returning to the squad until after next month’s international break.

It comes at the worst possible time for his team, as fans also witnessed Emil Hansson leave after only 20 minutes against Bolton. That could indicate poor decision-making to play the Swede, who also came off in the weekend’s victory over Lincoln just ten minutes into the second half.

How should Birmingham City handle this injury situation?

Davies and his team are short on wide players after both players sustained injuries, but they are optimistic about Hansson’s recovery. Without the Swede, the Blues would only have two options out wide.

They are not short on other areas of the pitch, however. For example, they signed three strikers in the summer: Lyndon Dykes, Alfie May, and Jay Stansfield. Stansfield, a former Fulham loanee, is an option to play in that area of the pitch, as is May, but when it comes to age, the former would be preferred because he possesses more of the qualities required in that area.
