Under-fire Birmingham City boss Wayne Rooney insists his team will be ready for the challenge of Sheffield Wednesday later today.
The Owls sit bottom of the Championship but visit a Blues team struggling in the early days of the Rooney era. City have taken just one point from a possible 15 under the England legend. Wednesday might have only won once so far this season but since Danny Röhl’s arrival, the performances have largely seen an improvement.
It is against that backdrop that Rooney is on guard against what would be regarded as an upset. He told the press: “They (Wednesday) have changed a little bit in how they play.
“The coach who has gone in there is a good coach, obviously he has been in the Red Bull system as well, and they want to try and press high up the pitch and play out from the back.
“It’s not something we haven’t faced before. He has had the same time on the training pitch with the players over the last couple of weeks. I’m probably expecting them to do something
“We’ve looked into how he plays, his style of play, especially when he has been the assistant coach at various clubs. We expect something a little bit different from them but we’re ready for whatever system he plays.”
On the criticism being aimed at him, Rooney added: “People – fans, pundits, whatever – can have their opinions, of course they can, but as long as we know what we’re trying to do and where we’re trying to go to, that’s fine.”
