Boston Celtics Rumors: Celtics Have Decision To Make With Neemias Queta And Luke Kornet, Linked To Kelly Olynyk And Isaiah Stewart

After being released by the Sacramento Kings prior to the start of training camp, Boston Celtics centre Neemias Queta likely knew he’d be back in the NBA this season. But the all-G-League first-team selection in 2022-23 probably couldn’t have imagined being a significant contributor to one of the NBA’s best teams. However, Kristaps Porzingis and Luke Kornet have both been hampered by injuries throughout the season.

Boston Celtics Rumours: Neemias Queta Taking Over for Luke Kornet C’s Targeting is the No. 2 Centre. Olynyk, Kelly In a trade, the Celtics signed Queta to a two-way contract a week after the Kings released him. The 7-footer had been dominant in the G-League the previous two seasons, averaging seven minutes per game in 20 appearances in Sacramento. He had a strong four-game summer league campaign with the Kings and was impressive in limited preseason action with the Celtics.

But coach Joe Mazzula had already planned his centre rotation. Porzingis, of course, was going to start and play at least 30 minutes, with Al Horford coming off the bench first, replacing both Porzingis and Jayson Tatum. If Tatum and Porzingis were both out of the game, Mazzula would start Kornet for 10-12 minutes.

Neemias Queta Porzingis has already missed eight games, while Kornet was cleared to play on Christmas Day after being out since Dec. 12 with an abductor injury. As a result, Queta has had an extended opportunity, which he has certainly taken advantage of. As a result, Gary Washburn of The Boston Globe believes Queta has made a strong case for a full-time spot at No. 2 on the C’s depth chart.

“This is what I’ve been waiting for,” Queta told The Boston Globe’s Gary Washburn. “Being prepared for these kinds of situations.” I had two years to complete it. And whenever it’s my turn, just be ready, and everything will fall into place. The game has just slowed down for me over time, and I’m becoming more at ease on the court.”

Despite Kornet’s presence on the court on Christmas Day, Queta played seven minutes and Kornet did not come off the bench in Boston’s 126-115 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. Queta did not score against the Lakers, but he did grab a rebound, steal a pass, and assist. Over the last six games, he has averaged 6.0 points and 6.2 rebounds in 17.3 minutes.

Queta is a low-potential bull because he is very physical and has a high motor. While he is offensively limited, he compensates by being a relentless rebounder on both ends of the floor and a solid rim protector.

Boston must make a decision on Kornet’s future after his $2.4 million salary becomes fully guaranteed on January 10. Boston has 14 standard-contract players. So, if the Celtics decide to release Kornet, the team has two weeks to return to 14 players, according to NBA rules. Queta’s two-way contract may be converted to a standard contract. Queta can currently play in 50 games as a two-way player and has appeared in 13 of the Celtics’ first 29.

Boston has the best record in the NBA (23-6) and has won eight of ten games, including three straight. However, with Porzingis’ injury and Horford’s age and recent durability concerns, the Celtics appear to be interested in improving their frontcourt depth.

With part-time starter Al Horford included, Boston has arguably the best starting lineup in the NBA, and possibly the best six-man unit. However, there are concerns about the Celtics’ bench, especially since the team’s first unit plays the most minutes in the league, nearly 34 per game. Aside from frontcourt depth, Boston’s biggest need is scoring, as the Celtics’ reserves are the lowest-scoring second unit in the league, averaging 26.9 points per game, nearly a full point lower than any other team.
