Brendan Rodgers makes announcement on Joe Hart’s future at Celtic
Brendan Rodgers will not look to sign a custodian during the January transfer window.
Joe Hart has barely missed a game since joining Spurs in August 2021, but as he turns 37 in April and his contract expires at the end of the season, his situation must be addressed at some point.
Neither Scott Bain nor Ben Siegrist have posed a serious threat to the former England custodian, who has now made over 130 appearances for Celtic.
Regarding Hart and the goalkeeping situation, Brendan Rodgers told the Daily Record:
It’s not something we’re considering right now. There are other areas that need to be addressed first. There will be positions where we can improve over the summer, and the same will be true in January, but I enjoy working with Joe; he’s a great guy. Hopefully he will continue.
We have not talked about it. At that age, I believe he is just happy to be playing. Joe’s family lives down south, so he has made a significant commitment to being up here.
A mid-season custodian change would be a risky move for any club; with such a specialised position, a summer deal and time to settle in appears far more logical.
Celtic have been extremely well served by goalkeepers in recent years, with Hart almost immediately solving a problem position that had been rotated between Vasilis Barkas, Bain, and Connor Hazard during the Lockdown season.
in other news, Brendan Rodgers’ bond is being tested by three factors, including the rumoured transfer of Jordan Henderson to Celtic.
