Brendan Rodgers provides an update on Cameron Carter-Vickers, and Celtic decides to take an international break.
With little difficulty, Celtic defeated St Johnstone yesterday to take back the top spot in the Scottish Premiership standings.
Brendan Rodgers’ side, who played a great game at Parkhead, can only benefit psychologically from the Bhoys going into the international break at the summit.
The Saints defence was unable to stop Kyogo Furuhashi’s incredible movement, as the 29-year-old scored off a centre from Nicolas Kuhn and then returned the favour early in the second half to help Kuhn score his second goal of the game.
James Forrest scored a third goal after coming off the bench, slamming home a strong left-footed shot after Matt O’Riley’s ball had gone inches perfectly through his possession.
The visitors’ Connor Smith pulled one back, but overall the Hoops had a great start to this weekend’s St Patrick’s Day celebrations, so there was nothing to be depressed about.
The international break will now force us to miss a few weeks of our (senior Men’s) Celtic fix, but Rodgers has disclosed that plans are in place to keep his team competitive at Lennoxtown.
“There’s still work to be done, so there will be some rest,” he said. “We’ll have a game behind closed doors to get one or two of our players up to speed.”
Livingston was waiting for the Scottish Premiership to resume at the Tony Macaroni Arena on Sunday, March 31.
Cameron Carter-Vickers of the Celtics, an update from Brendan Rodgers
After overcoming a hamstring issue that necessitated a scan to play for the Bhoys yesterday, Cameron Carter-Vickers was replaced by Odin Thiago Holm after 75 minutes.
With a strong defensive performance, the US international avoided injury and received a 7.8/10 Sofascore match rating.
However, Rodgers has disclosed that he is not gambling with his health in the final stretch. It has been decided that Carter-Vickers will continue his fitness work at Lennoxtown instead of moving to the United States after talks with Gregg Berhalter, the company’s national boss.
“I spoke to Gregg (Berhalter) from America, from the US team, and we had a good chat and obviously the case for Cam, who has been out for a bit,” said Rodgers [Clyde 1 Superscoreboard].
“My concern was that he might disappear and participate in a few major games, possibly even more in June. After a fruitful discussion, it was decided that he would stay behind, work with us, and attempt to stay healthy for the remainder of the season.
Carter-Vickers is going to be a key player in the title fight, so it makes sense to make sure we minimise the chance of him suffering another hamstring injury in the midst of a frustrating season for the former Tottenham Hotspur player.
The best course of action is to keep him behind to ensure his fitness for the remainder of the term, and the break will enable us to give him the much-needed time to properly recover.
