The Cleveland Browns made a hire on Friday that may go unnoticed by fans, but it could pay dividends on the field come autumn.

The Browns have appointed Dr. Dustin Nabhan as the team’s head of athlete health and performance.

Nabhan comes to town with a diverse background, having earned his Ph.D. in sport science from the Norwegian School of Sport Science in Norway. From 2009 until 2021, he worked for the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee, first as a sports fellow and then as vice president of sports medicine, research, and innovation. He most recently worked for two years as a health and human performance consultant for a variety of sports organizations and technological enterprises.

In a team-issued news release, Nabhan emphasized the franchise’s willingness to share his passion for enhancing players’ health while also improving their performance.

“In meeting with the leadership team throughout the interview process, it’s clear that the organization shares my passion for athlete health, safety, and performance. I’m looking forward to collaborating with our staff in place and being additive to the mission of helping our players with a holistic approach to maximize their physical and mental performance, all to put us in the best position to win and compete at the highest level for championships.”

Nabhan will be in charge of the Browns’ athletic training staff, according to Cleveland.com.

It will be intriguing to see how big of an impact Nabhan can have on keeping athletes healthy and playing at their peak. The Browns suffered multiple major injuries in 2023, including season-ending ones to quarterback Deshaun Watson, running back Nick Chubb, and offensive tackles Jack Conklin, Jedrick Wills Jr., and Dawand Jones.

Of course, some of those injuries had nothing to do with the players’ preparation – nothing could have prevented Chubb’s knee from being destroyed by a borderline cheap hit from Pittsburgh Steelers defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick, for example – but there is no harm in bringing in someone with new ideas as the Browns strive to return to the playoffs in 2024.
