Callum McGregor is raving about the Celtic kid who just graduated from academy.
After defeating Dundee 7-1 at Parkhead last night, Celtic provided a reminder that they are still very much in the running for the Scottish Premiership title.
Brendan Rodgers praised his team’s intensity throughout the match, saying they played at a level similar to when he was a player at Parkhead.
“Nights like that take me back to when I was first here—the performance, the intensity, and everyone enjoying it,” the Irishman said after the game. Although our goal is to win, Celtic’s philosophy is to play football that enthrals its fans.
There’s no denying that the actions on the pitch, which saw no fewer than seven scorers contribute to a convincing win on home soil, thrilled the crowd.
Celtic’s 6-0 lead at the half was fueled by goals from Cameron Carter-Vickers, Adam Idah, Matt O’Riley, Daizen Maeda, Greg Taylor, and Callum McGregor. The fans celebrated with some of the loudest standing ovations Parkhead had heard in a long time.
The game’s most memorable moment, though, came when Daniel Kelly scored his first goal for the team he grew up playing for on 63 minutes. He curled a beautiful strike past Trevor Carson to add an incredible seventh goal to the score.
Kelly’s hard work in the engine room earned him his first professional contract with the Bhoys last season, and it gave him hope for the future.
Daniel Kelly leaves Celtic captain Callum McGregor speechless
As part of his post-match media duties, Kelly spoke with Celtic captain McGregor about their team’s outstanding performance against Dundee at home
The Scotland international showed his excitement to watch the young man continue to grow at Parkhead by praising him highly.
“Over the time I’ve been here, we try and add to the young players coming through the academy and into the first-team,” McGregor said to Celtic TV.
“This guy has been amazing since he developed a genuine personality and admirable qualities. He wants to work hard and learn as much as he can; these qualities, which come from the academy, are crucial if you want to work here as a professional. You have to take a chance when you come on, and he did just that. His weaker foot makes for a brilliant finish, but the challenge is to keep going and want more. We need to give him more opportunities to train and play because the group genuinely adores him for it.
Kelly certainly didn’t let his momentous occasion go to waste, as he built on his successful debut in green and white earlier this year against Buckie Thistle.
Since McGregor rose through the ranks from the youth system to become club captain and leave a legacy of trophy-laden success, his career can be used as a guide for aspiring stars.
Midfielders David Turnbull and Hyeokkyu Kwon left in January, so Kelly might have more chances later on to establish himself in the starting lineup.
