Celtic announce details of Chelsea clash, Brendan Rodgers also reacts to Chelsea fixture at iconic USA stadium
Celtic will face Chelsea in their final preseason friendly.
The two clubs will face off on July 27 at the University of Notre Dame in Celtic’s third and final pre-season match.
Celtic tweeted on Sunday, hinting at pre-season matches in Ireland and the United States; just over 24 hours later, some details are emerging.
Tonight, Celtic announced:
The University of Notre Dame will welcome both Celtic and Chelsea to Indiana this summer, as the Bhoys go head to head with Mauricio Pochettino’s men on July 27 at the iconic Notre Dame Stadium in the city of South Bend.
The match is the last of three games for the Bhoys on their USA pre-season tour this summer, with more information on other opponents and match venues to be announced very soon.
Celtic’s pre-season matches have two very different outcomes depending on how the season ends.
In an ideal world, it will be an opportunity to settle new signings ahead of a third consecutive season in the Champions League–assuming they finish this season as SPFL champions.
If Celtic do not win the title, they will play four midweek Champions League qualifiers in August against teams from France and Portugal.
A new custodian will be one of the most important additions during the offseason, as Joe Hart will retire at the end of the season.
Brendan Rodgers reacts to Chelsea fixture at iconic USA stadium
Brendan Rodgers, Celtic manager, is looking forward to the challenge against Mauricio Pochettino’s English Premier League club, as he stated that:
“Everyone at Celtic is delighted to be visiting the United States again, particularly for such an exciting pre-season programme and we are really looking forward to meeting Chelsea at Notre Dame,” Rodgers said.
“I know Mauricio well and I look forward to seeing him and his team again in July for what I am sure will be a brilliant occasion between two major European clubs. Pre-season preparation is always an important time and, of course, Chelsea will present us with a strong and exciting challenge.
“We are so fortunate to have such a strong support worldwide and particularly right across the US, so I’m sure our visit will allow our fans a great opportunity to see the team in action and, in turn, we really look forward to seeing our fans there.
“To be playing at the famous and iconic University of Notre Dame at such a fantastic venue will be a unique moment for the club and we are sure the home of the ‘Fighting Irish’ will generate huge support for Celtic and inspire a great sporting occasion.”
