Celtic are reportedly in talks to sign Jung Ho-yeon, bringing their Korean contingent to four.

The midfielder is under contract with Gwanhju until the end of the year, but he could soon join Oh Hyeon-gyu, Yang Hyun Jun, and Kwon Hyeok-kyu in Glasgow.

As a central midfielder, Ho-yeon would be joining a very competitive Celtic squad, with Kwon sent on loan to St Mirren despite not having started a game since his summer move.

Callum McGregor, Reo Hatate, and Matt O’Riley are the established first picks, with David Turnbull, Odin Thiago Holm, Tomoki Iwata, and Paulo Bernardo serving as backups.

In a transfer roundup in the Daily Record, Scott Burns reports:

“Celtic have also held talks with FC Gwangju midfielder Jung Ho-yeon. There is a good chance a move for the South Korean could progress before the close of the window, although Gwangju would prefer him to leave at the end of the year.”

It is difficult to justify bringing in any midfielder to Celtic, given that Iwata, Holm, Bernardo, and Kwon were all signed in 2023 and are struggling to establish themselves as regulars.

That problem appeared to be addressed when Bernardo was signed on loan from Benfica, but it appears that Mark Lawwell is looking to add another midfielder to the squad.
