Celtic Hero Shuts Down ‘New Rangers’ Hype After Bold Claims

It’s the same old story for Rangers fans—one victory over Celtic, and suddenly, they believe they’re world-beaters.

As Brendan Rodgers sarcastically put it, after every win, “they are always coming.” But history continues to prove otherwise.

Celtic’s 3-2 defeat to Rangers a fortnight ago was undoubtedly a poor performance from the Hoops. But instead of keeping their heads down and focusing on their own form, Rangers once again acted as if they had won the Champions League. The embarrassing over-celebrations from Vaclav Cerny—now facing a ban and a Police Scotland probe—were just another example of how overblown every Rangers win is.

Mark Wilson Laughs Off ‘New Rangers’ Hype

Yet, while Celtic have consistently shown resilience by bouncing back from setbacks, Rangers have repeatedly followed up big wins with dropped points and poor performances against weaker opposition.

Former Celtic right-back Mark Wilson took aim at the predictable overreaction from Ibrox pundits, shutting down the usual post-victory optimism on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard.

After Gordon Dalziel suggested that Barry Ferguson had given Rangers “a lift” and that they would “cruise” their next game against Dundee, Wilson couldn’t help but laugh:

“But how many times have we said this before about a Rangers performance?”

Dalziel then attempted to argue that “it’s a different Rangers, Mark,” to which Wilson immediately hit back:

“How many times have we said that before? When they beat Celtic in the New Year, we all sat here, ‘Wow, what a performance, that’s a different Rangers,’ and a couple of weeks later, they revert back. These are games that this Rangers side, this year, have slipped up on and failed badly. I think the game will tell us a lot.”

Celtic’s Mentality vs. Rangers’ Inconsistency

Wilson’s comments ring true. While Celtic have maintained consistency and are on course to retain their Scottish Premiership title, Rangers continue to struggle with post-Old Firm syndrome—picking up a big result and then crumbling under the weight of expectation.

For all the talk of a “new Rangers,” the league table still tells the real story. Celtic remain clear at the top, while Rangers, once again, are playing catch-up.
